Passionate about environmental issues.
Mia Östman’s background as en Environmental Inspector provided her with the perfect starting point for driving Fabege’s sustainability issues. She is highly committed to ensuring that Fabege’s involvement in the development of Arenastaden in Solna meets the company’s environmental requirements.
“Arenastaden is exciting in many ways. Primarily because it involves converting unutilised industrial land into a vibrant, modern and sustainable city district.”
Of the several players on site, Fabege is the single largest property owner and with this comes major responsibility.
“We have set stringent demands and are monitoring everything, from energy and waste management to chemicals and environmentally certified building materials.”
Fabege builds for the future
One project that sticks out in the new city district is Vattenfall’s new head office. Vattenfall is striving to become number one in terms of the environment and it found a corresponding business partner in Fabege, which also has a strong focus on environmental issues. They have now jointly initiated a unique cooperation project where extremely low energy consumption is one goal. Consumption is to be so low that it is far below the current limits for what could be classified as an environmental building.
“The development is unique in that it is characterised by in-depth cooperation between tenant, contractor and developer. Using various visualisation solutions, where electricity and water consumption can be monitored in real time, commitment for and interest in the environment and energy issues will be generated among employees. The objective is to understand how each individual will be able to influence the property’s energy consumption.”
Arenastaden is also the location of the new national arena to be built for football and other events. This will be a landmark and it gave the name to the area. The aim is to create a sustainable and vibrant city district characterised throughout by a solid mix of office, residential and retail properties, excellent means of transport and environmental consideration.
Continuous environmental commitment
Mia functions as the hub of the environmental network at Fabege and ensures that property management and project activities retain their focus on and commitment to environmental issues during the development of the city district. Solna City has high ambitions for Arenastaden and wants it to be one of Europe’s most environment-friendly city districts.
“Fabege focuses continuously on ensuring that its properties are energy efficient and the increased market interest in environmental and sustainability issues is something we want to be involved in and deliver on.”
Mia loves her work as environmental manager. “With my specific expertise, I function as an advisor, promoter and controller. I am involved in management, planning, external communications and business development. The breadth and depth of my work is very satisfying. Its breadth involves me in many different parts of our business and its depth helps me to continuously deepen my expertise.”
