Highest sustainability rating for Saab’s offices in Solna Strand
Saab’s offices in Solna Strand have been certified under BREEAM In-Use, with the majority of the buildings achieving the highest rating, Outstanding, and one achieving Excellent. The Nöten property is one of only eight buildings in Sweden to be awarded the Outstanding rating.
– It has been a goal for us to focus on sustainability both during the construction phase, by reusing layouts and building materials as far as possible, and in future operations through energy recovery and smart systems that optimise water and electricity consumption. The BREEAM certifications are a mark of quality for Saab’s sustainability ambitions, says Jenny Eld Bedoire, Site Manager at Saab, Solna Strand.
The certification is the result of close collaboration between Fabege and Saab, as well as a well-executed construction process with high ambitions in sustainability and circular building. Through active efforts in preservation, reuse and conscious material choices, the project has significantly reduced its climate footprint. Instead of removing and replacing materials, the focus has been on making the most of existing assets and upgrading the property where it has the greatest impact.
Reuse is also evident in the building’s material choices. Entrance portals and glass partitions have been reused between the buildings, around 70 per cent of the suspended ceilings have been given a new lease of life, and 15,000 square metres of textile flooring have been reused. All sanitary ware, including approximately 320 toilets, has been reused, along with kitchenette units, stone worktops and parts of the electrical installations.
Even elements not immediately visible have been reused. Building materials such as plasterboard, timber panels and studs have been dismantled and reinstalled, and ventilation ducts have been repurposed.
– The certification demonstrates how existing buildings can be developed to meet customers’ high demands for sustainability, functionality and long-term performance, while at the same time reducing climate impact. It is a clear example of how circular construction works in practice and how we at Fabege, in close collaboration with our customers, can develop complex and tailored properties without compromising on sustainability, says Joakim Perers at Fabege.
